Benjamin Ryan
Technical Theatre Designer/Engineer
About Me:
Welcome to my website portfolio of my experience as a theatre tech. I am a 17 year old high-school student wishing to pursue a career in the technical theatre department. I am a dedicated technical theatre engineer with half a dozen years of experience based in small town Harmony, Minnesota. I specialize in lighting and sound design while also dabbling in set, costumes, and even some acting.I have collaborated on a variety of projects, from community theatre to your average homecoming dance. I’m fully committed to our small but powerful drama department in Fillmore Central, under the direction of Jackie Whitacre. When I’m not behind the scenes, I enjoy working on vehicles, learning new skills, and spending time out with friends.
My Recent Projects
"Clowns With Guns (A Vaudeville)"
In Clowns With Guns, I had the role of Lighting Engineer and helped instruct the sound engineer on his tasks and work. This show is one of our One Act competition plays so it was performed at many different venues without much previous knowledge of the stage. I was instructed at each school on their lighting board and had to translate that into our show for five different places.
Grease
In Grease, I was the Lighting Designer, Sound Designer, and worked with the set crew to build our car. I was also tasked with teaching three younger students to use our light and sound systems while I was acting on stage.
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Midsummer Night's Dream was one of the first shows where I was left to myself to do all the tech. I was the lighting engineer and sound designer along with helping hang the greenery from the ceiling for our tree.
Monster Bash Haunted House
Monster Bash is one of our community's biggest fundraiser for Fillmore Central's arts programs. Last year I challenged myself with building an 8ft tall book and a homemade "wendigo" costume and mask. I have been involved in this since 2014. Families participate by claiming and decorating rooms and acting.

The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid was the show I was more of an apprentice. I learned everything that the previous techs knew and did my own researched and learned more. There was a software error a week before the show and both the techs were absent. I was tasked with redesigning the lighting for the whole show.
Arsenic & Old Lace
Arsenic and Old Lace was the first community theatre show I was sound engineer. I have previously participated in other community theatre shows such as Seussical and Once Upon a Mattress.
